Do you ever find yourself thinking that Glee’s new characters seem a tad similar to some of the original characters? Well, fear not. Glee creator Ryan Murphy says that won’t be the case for long.
Ryan tells The Hollywood Reporter that even though Marley (Melissa Benoist), Kitty (Becca Tobin), and Jake (Jacob Artist) might seem like carbon copies of Rachel (Lea Michele), Quinn (Dianna Agron), and Puck (Mark Salling) right now — that is all about to change. You only need to wait a few more weeks.
“When you get into around Episodes 5, 6 and 7, you see that they have very different issues and things going on than the graduating senior group did,” Ryan says.
So what will be so different about them? Ryan didn’t specify about all of the characters’ differences, but he made a point of explaining why Marley will be quite different from Rachel. “We've never had a character like Marley on the show,” Ryan says. “Rachel was a confident animal right from the get-go, though she did have insecurities.”
As for what Marley will be dealing with, Ryan says things won’t be easy for the New Directions newbie. Future Marley storylines will center on her “relationship with her mother, guys, and her self-consciousness about her weight,” according to Ryan.
In other words, Marley will have a lot more problems than just deciding what color of newsboy cap to wear each day (not that hats aren’t important, mind you).
