Sometimes, all you need are a couple of gunshots and the fear of impending death to give your TV show the ratings boost it needs.

Glee viewership soared up 20 percent in viewers for Thursday’s controversial Season 4, Episode 18: "Shooting Star." 6.8 million people watched the episode, landing it a 2.4 demo rating, according to TV Line.

For a show that has been getting less-than-optimal ratings all season, this is welcome news, especially considering that FOX still hasn’t officially renewed Glee yet for Season 5. With outside factors like rehab and pregnancy making the show’s future seem even more uncertain, its very encouraging to finally hear a bit of positive news.

That said, this episode is not without controversy. The school shooting episode comes less than four months after the tragic shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and people in Newton, Conn., are upset about it. On top of that, Glee’s decision to have Becky, a girl with Down Syndrome, be the one who brought the gun to school has also drawn scrutiny.

Do you agree with Glee’s choice to tackle the issue of guns in schools this way, or do you think it could have been handled differently?
