Glee fans were quick to note the uncanny fact in the wake of Whitney Houston's tragic death, Mercedes (Amber Riley) was already slated to perform Whitney's classic ballad "I Will Always Love You" on Season 3, Episode 13, "Heart," set to air on Tuesday, Feb. 14. Now, the producers may be working overtime to re-edit the episode to be assembled as a Whitney Houston tribute to honor the late singer's incredible legacy.
On February 11, a source told E! Online that producers wanted to pay tribute to Whitney as best they could, even though the episode was already finished and set to air. "Yes, we are trying [to do a tribute]," the source said. "The episode had been locked but we are going back in."
On February 13, a rep for 20th Century Fox confirmed to E! that the episode would, in fact, be dedicated to Whitney. "Purely coincidentally, the episode contains Mercedes (Amber Riley) singing 'I Will Always Love You,' the Dolly Parton song Houston made famous in The Bodyguard. The producers have decided to dedicate the episode to Houston's memory with a card in the end credits."
With the episode's airdate so close at hand, Glee understandably had no time to re-write the script or film additional scenes. However, the card and dedication at the end of the episode will still allow the show to honor her memory. Plus, if we know Glee, a full Whitney tribute episode shouldn't be too far down the line.
