Maxfield Camp on His Glee Project Elimination — and Singing for “Gorgeous” Lea Michele
There’s no doubt about it: Maxfield Camp is a good-lookin’ dude. He’s humble, sweet, and a total charmer. Plus, did we mention his deep, soulful singing voice? We swoon just thinking about it.
That said, this country cutie is still new to the music biz, and his lack of experience was evident during last night’s The Glee Project 2 premiere. So when the time came to eliminate the first contestant of Season 2, the 23-year-old Nashville guy found himself being sent home.
“I don’t know what happened. For some reason, I couldn’t sing on key,” Maxfield tells Entertainment Weekly of that infamous studio session that may have ultimately sealed his fate. “By the end of it, I did get it, and I think the outcome of the song was really cool. It just took me awhile to get there.”
If anything, it seems like the whirlwind that is the Glee Project may have just all happened too fast. “When I met Robert in Nashville, I felt like I was different from I was when I was on the show,” Max says.
“Being thrown into stuff like that right off the bat affected me in a way. I wish, looking back on it now, if I had the opportunity again, I’d just like to show, like how Zach said when I was performing on stage, you know, ‘Show more emotions in your face.’ I would have gone more over-the-top than I did then.”
You know, less of the chill, laid-back country crooner. Something more energized and upbeat. Sounds very Glee — but maybe not quite as, well, Maxfield.
With his time on the show over, the budding songwriter is back to focusing on his own music back home in Nashville. “I’m singing and songwriting a lot, so hopefully people will see my songs soon,” he says. “That would be great. I’m taking it one step at a time. I love to sing, love to write, love to perform, so I plan to keep doing that.”
Speaking of performing, there’s one performance opportunity on the show he won’t soon forget: Getting to sing in front of Glee starlet Lea Michele (Rachel).
“Yeah, first [Glee creator] Ryan [Murphy] walks in, and you’re like, “Okay.” And then Lea Michele walks in. You’ve got the creator of the show and the star of the show.” Talk about nerve wracking!
He continues, “ Lea Michele is gorgeous. It was awesome. I can’t complain about getting to sing in front of a pretty lady.”
