The photographer who snapped those controversial photos of Glee’s Heather Morris (Brittany) from last year is finally getting a chance to explain himself. Sorta.
Photographer Tyler Shields took a lot of heat when his photos of Heather — showing the actress with a black eye and being tied up with the cord from an iron — appeared to be glorifying domestic abuse. Tyler later apologized for the photos.
Tyler is now trying to iron things out himself, telling Fashionista that the idea for the shoot started off as tame but escalated from there. “I had met [Heather], and she was always like, ‘I wanna do a shoot one day — I would love to do a Barbie-themed shoot.’ And I was like, ‘Awesome,’” Tyler explains.
Somehow, Tyler went from making her look like Barbie to, uh, something very different from Barbie. “I wanted to get, like, a pink Corvette and blow it up or something like that, but they’re really like hard to find,” he says. “So we ended up doing her as bruised Barbie.” Right — because that makes sense.
As you might imagine, Tyler got plenty of emails from people who weren’t exactly pleased with the pics. “There were some people who saw that and thought that I gave her a black eye for real,” Tyler says. “I got 25,000 death threats because of that photo shoot.”
We’re thinking Tyler is wishing he would have just listened to Heather and stuck with plain ol’ Barbie.
