Season 4 of Glee might not be premiering until later this fall, but the cast and crew have already almost finished filming through Episode 2. On August 15, creator Ryan Murphy tweeted a link to this brand new promo video of the very first footage of the season.
So what new spoilers, hints, and teases can we learn from all this, anyway? We’re breaking down the promo — second by second, frame by frame — searching for clues. Take a look at what we found out.
Scene 1a: Dreams Do Come True
“We’re coming off of a National championship,” Mr. Schue (Matthew Morrison) tells the glee club. But there’s so few of them sitting in the choir room this year. Especially with no more Rory (Damian McGinty). Sniff. The New Directions are in some serious need of new members!
Scene 1b: But What Comes Next?
Flashback to a scene of Rachel (Lea Michele) happily kissing [her then-fiance] Finn(Cory Monteith). How perfect everything seemed back then! Now? Not so much.
Her new dance instructor at NYADA in New York City — played by a stunningly gorgeous Kate Hudson — is just as tough, sarcastic and snarky as promised. “I bet you were a big star in Iowa,” she smiles patronizingly. “Um, actually, I’m from Ohio,” Rachel responds naively. “Ohio!” Kate’s character, Cassandra retorts. “Even worse.” Please, oh please let her be the Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) of NYADA.
Scene 2a: Thursday, September 13.
That’s right. Your Tuesday nights this fall just opened up, but you’d better cancel any and all future Thursday plans. Glee is moving nights this season, and it’s an airing an hour later, too.
Scene 2b: Will gives Emma (Jayma Mays) a tap on the nose.
But are these two getting married, or aren’t they? We keep hearing conflicting reports!
Scene 2c: The New Directions perform on stage.
Blaine (Darren Criss), Brittany (Heather Morris) and Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) are all standing front and center. But who will be the new star performer of the group? Whoever it is, we’ve heard this person is not who you’d think!
Scene 3a: Someone get’s slushied.
But wait a second. Who is she? That brown hair, printed headband and argyle sweater simply scream Rachel Berry. But we already saw that Rachel has graduated and moved to New York City. Is THIS the reason Glee’s Season 4 premiere is titled “The New Rachel Berry”? Because this girl looks like she could be the spitting image of Rachel! (Though, we’ll admit, it’s a bit hard to tell from underneath all that bright red slushie.
Our best guess is that this new mystery girl might be Marley (Melissa Benoist). We don’t know much about Marley so far, other than that she has brown hair, and she’s joining the New Directions. But both those descriptors seem to fit! Plus, Ryan Murphy already started the rumor that Marley might be dating Puck’s (Mark Salling) younger half-brother, Jake (Jacob Artist). We really hope this is the case. Puckelberry 2.0, anyone?
Scene 3b: Sue and Will talk in the teacher’s lounge.
Sue tells Will, “You need to be ruthless in protecting the integrity of your idiot club.”
Scene 4a: A Brave New Glee.
A solo for Blaine! Gosh, we’ve never seen one of those before. This time, he’s standing in the McKinley High School courtyard and singing “It’s Time” by Imagine Dragons.
Scene 4b: Sue has a baby!
We already know that she’s a girl, and that her name is Robin. And yes, like those test results suggested last season, little Robin will have Down syndrome.
Scene 5a: Look who’s joining the New Directions.
It’s Wade (aka Unique), the character played by Glee Project Season 1 runner-up Alex Newell. Guess Wade wasn’t joking last season when he said he was considering transferring to McKinley!
Brittany, however, is a tiny bit confused. “That’s a great haircut, Mercedes. I thought you graduated.” Oh, Brit. Never, ever change.
