Remember when Heather Morris (Brittany) revealed that Glee was going the way of less singing during the last half of the season? Well, this week’s new episode definitely represented that shift with almost five performances, one of which involved no singing whatsoever — though we enjoyed watching Mike (Harry Shum Jr.) show off his killer moves — and another, which featured a mid-performance breakdown courtesy of Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz).
So who did that leave? A battle of the balladeers with Mercedes (Amber Riley), Sunshine (Charice), and Holly (Gwyneth Paltrow) tackling singing divas Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion, and Adele, respectively. Though Sunshine (whose return to Glee was so short that we hardly had time to say, “Nice beret!”) moved us with her chill-inducing rendition of “All By Myself,” we weren’t as blown away by Holly’s lackluster, orchestra-backed “Turning Tables.” And with all her (well-intentioned) diva behavior, a lesser gleek may have worried that Mercedes wouldn’t deliver. But it’s Mercedes. And to echo Rachel’s (Lea Michele) sentiments: “The house [was] brought down.”
