The finale of Smash aired to the cheers — and surely some jeers — of a growing audience after a first season of big Broadway thrills. Most importantly, a star was finally crowned as the new Marilyn: That is, the intense rivalry between Karen (Katherine McPhee) and Ivy (Megan Hilty) came to a head in casting the role of Marilyn Monroe in the show's fictional musical centerpiece.
So who will be donning those famous platinum locks (and buxom bust)?
As if you couldn't predict, crowd favorite (and eternal "up-and-comer") Karen is the pick! Despite the doubts of snooty bigshot naysayers Julia (Debra Messing) and Eileen (the fabulous Anjelica Huston), Karen managed to snag the role on sheer good-girl charm (not to mention a TRULY showstopping final number). That charm was bolstered, of course, when our little harlot Ivy ever-so-casually revealed that she slept with Karen's fiancé Dev (Raza Jaffrey). Ouch and a half.
Thankfully, Karen still has the dreamy, sleepy-eyed Derek (Jack Davenport) at her back, rooting for her and intimately guiding her as he's done from the very start. Maybe the set-up is FINALLY in place for a full-throttle Season 2 affair between Karen and Derek to add some notches on her belt? Here's hoping...
