If The Glee Project’s Nellie Veitenheimer seemed a little bit freaked to hear she’d be portraying sexy pop icon in Tuesday’s Season 2, Episode 7: “Theatricality” — it’s because she most definitely was.
“I about died!” Nellie tells the Huffington Post in a new interview. “The first thing I thought of was her sexiest, most provocative outfit and I was like, "WHY?" I was truly terrified that I was going to be half-naked with a snake around my neck.”
Nellie didn’t end up having to wear that dreaded snake. In fact, the version of Britney she ended up portraying was much more bubblegum and sweet.
Yet even though Nellie says she “ended up embracing Britney” and found her “really fun to play,” that still wasn’t enough to keep the 19-year-old Tacoma, Washington native from ultimately being sent home at the end of the episode.
The judges said that she just didn’t seem to want it as much as her competitors, but Nellie maintains it’s more about her personality than a lack of drive.
“I've always been terrible at expressing myself,” she says. “I was so intimidated by everyone else and how badly they wanted it. [...] I think [my responses] came off as being weak, but I hope everyone did see how much I really did want to be on Glee."
Something fans couldn’t help but notice this season is how much chemistry Nellie had with Blake Jenner in plenty of the music videos. So were the two close off-camera, as well?
“Michael [Weisman] and Blake were definitely my best friends in the competition,” Nellie says. “I think after "Sexuality Week," the mentors realized that I worked really well with him. I just felt so comfortable working with him, and I'm so thankful for that. He's amazing and such a fantastic actor. We had a lot of similar ideas, so it was very seamless getting to work with him.”
She adds that the bromance between Michael and Blake was even bigger than it appeared on the show, and there are plenty of fun behind-the-scenes moments she wish fans could have seen more of.
The contenders might not be living together anymore, but Nellie says they still hang out all the time. “We've all remained so close even after the show.”
Though she originally hails from the Pacific Northwest, Nellie recently made the move to Los Angeles to continue pursuing her music and acting dreams. And yes, despite what some may think, she does hope to one day have an acting career.
“I just want to keep acting and singing,” she says. “I know everyone thinks that I just want to be a singer-songwriter, but I do have a love for acting, and I'm going to be pursuing that as well.”
