Glee creator Ryan Murphy’s new NBC comedy, The New Normal, might not premiere until September 11, but the first episode is already on Hulu — and we may or may not have watched it a dozen times already.
The New Normal tells the story of a gay couple hoping to start a family, and we instantly noticed comparisons between the fashion-conscious Bryan Collins and Glee’s very own Kurt (Chris Colfer).
However, when speaking exclusively with Wetpaint Entertainment at TNN’s Paley Center for Media event on September 5, The New Normal co-creator and executive producer Ali Adler tells us there is another familiar face who bears an even more striking resemblance to Bryan: Glee boss Ryan Murphy himself.
Wetpaint Entertainment: So you’re working on the show with Ryan who is “Mr. Glee.” Do you think the show will appeal to Glee fans?
Ali Adler: Oh I hope so. Ryan Murphy’s fan base is very vast and varied. You have Glee and American Horror Story – both Murphy productions that are very different. I think he just writes about people and feelings and he puts them in different situations and this, we were just inspired by our own lives and the lives of our writers to create something that just felt hopefully relatable to everyone.
Are there any plans to have any Glee and New Normal crossovers?
Well there is a show within the show on The New Normal where Bryan Collins is the executive producer and creator of a show called “Sing” so you can take that as you’d like. There are definitely certain attributes that both Ryan Murphy and both Bryan Collins share.
What are you most looking forward to about the premiere of the show?
I’m just having fun. Everyday I go to work and I love just the people I work with – the writing staff and the actors and crew. It’s just a tremendously gifted, talented bunch of people and I’m just really happy that whatever we’re doing so far – we’re just having a great time.
The New Normal premieres Tuesday, September 11 at 9:30om on NBC, but the full pilot is already available to watch early on Hulu.
