It’s clear that last week’s Glee Season 4, Episode 18: “Shooting Star” was shocking. But how does it rank when compared to the show’s most unexpected moments of all time? To find out, we’ve ranked the top five (okay, six) most surprising Glee episodes ever. Hold onto your hats — and your Kleenex boxes.
5. TIE: Klaine’s first smooch and Finchel’s onstage kiss
(Season 2, Episode 16: “Original Song” and Season 2, Episode 22: “New York”)
A tie is never a good way to start things off, but it shows there are just too many shocking Glee kisses. Sure, Klaine’s first-ever kiss was all kinds of amazing — especially since we started to think it would never happen — but was it more shocking than Finn kissing Rachel onstage and causing the group to land in 12th (!) place at Nationals? Will leave that to you to decide!
4. Finn proposes to Rachel
(Season 3, Episode 10: “Yes/No”)
Finn hasn’t always been one to take a stand for what he believes in, so seeing him pop the question to Rachel before graduating high school was as magical as it was jaw-dropping. Finn has managed to do some pretty shocking things since then — kissing Emma, punching Brody — but nothing was quite as gasp-worthy as Finn telling Rachel that she’s his beacon of light. Squeal.
3. Blaine cheated — and Santana almost did
Remember when Klaine and Brittana were the perfect couples, and we didn’t have a care in the world? Before we knew what hit us, Blaine confessed to cheating, while Santana confessed to almost cheating — and in the same episode, no less. We’re still counting the days until these couples inevitably reunite, but even if they do, it doesn’t make this episode okay. At all.
2. Sue gets fired after the school shooting scare
It barely misses the top slot as the most shocking Glee episode ever, but last week’s stunner is pretty darn close to the top. Sure, the fact that a gun went off was crazy — not to mention that it was Becky who did it — but let’s face it: Even just seeing Sue commit a selfless act for someone probably would have been enough to make this episode truly shocking.
1. Karofsky’s suicide attempt and Quinn’s crash
(Season 3, Episode 14: “On My Way”)
It was pretty clear from the start of this episode that something bad was going to happen with Karofsky, but we were still aghast when he tried to kill himself. However, even more shocking was Quinn’s car crash as she was heading to Finchel’s wedding. Luckily, both characters ended up going on to live another day, but just the thought of this episode still makes us jumpy.
