Naya Rivera (Santana Lopez) plays a proud Latina on Glee, but back in the day — a preschool-aged Naya sported a curlier, textured ‘do and played the role of African American tots on early ‘90s shows like Family Matters. So what is her ethnicity, anyway?

Naya recently told MTV that she is is half Puerto Rican, one quarter German, and one quarter African-American.

Yet that ambiguity didn’t exactly help the actress when she was just starting out in the business. “That was always a big issue for me because casting directors tended to be like ‘okay, are you Hispanic, for this role?’ Or ‘is she going to be African American?” she told MTV. ’ It was really tough and work started to slow down.”

In fact, things got so bad, that Naya says she almost made the decision to quit acting altogether. Thank goodness she didn’t! We can’t even imagine the show without her.
