High school romances may feel like they are going to last forever, but sadly enough, that often just isn’t the case!
Couples can, and often do, drift apart after high school as they start new lives after graduation. Eventually, they often break up as life takes them down separate paths. Realistically, this means many of Glee’s current power couples maybe just aren’t meant to last.
On a happier note, though, has anyone ever heard the term “high school sweetheart?” Some high school couples do end up being together for life, taking their love from high school years into their grown-up lives. There is still hope!
Finn and Rachel
They’re already off to a rocky start: What, with him suddenly breaking up with her on their wedding day, sending her on a train to NYC unannounced, and then running off to join the army.
Still, this is Finn (Cory Monteith) and Rachel (Lea Michele) we’re talking about. They’re Glee’s golden couple! We have a pretty hard time believing that Finchel really is done for good. Making the relationship work would be tough, especially with their past drama and his feats that he’s holding her back from her destiny of true stardom, but we still think these two high school sweethearts have a fighting chance.
New York City. A tiny shoebox apartment. Happy to just be together as they fearlessly chase after their dreams. Somehow, we still think that it all might just be able to work out.
Kurt and Blaine
We were terrified that Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Blaine (Darren Criss) might break up after Kurt’s graduation, but now that we know about his rejection from NYADA — that must mean a whole new year of Klaine in Lima, right? Not so fast! Early spoilers point towards Kurt still deciding to make the move to NYC, so Kurt and Blaine just may end up having a long-distance relationship, after all.
That’s not to say that Klaine is done for good, though. Didn’t you hear Kurt in the Season 3 finale? He told Blaine he’s “never breaking up” with him. We love seeing these two together, and there’s no doubt they make an adorable couple. Still, we are a bit curious to see what each of them might be like in the context of a relationship with someone else — or just by themselves! Given the difficult nature of a long-distance romance, we’d say there’s at least a chance we might be finding that out sooner or later.
Brittany and Santana
Here’s another Glee relationship that just might have to try things long distance for a while. Last we checked, Santana (Naya Rivera) was strongly considering a move to New York City to pursue her dreams of fame, while super-senior Britt (Heather Morris) still has one more year left in high school.
Now, if Santana goes with her previous plan and decides to stick around Lima for another year, instead — we see no reason why Brittana won’t stay together. But what about after that? Santana’s love for Brittany is pretty hard to deny, though it's sometimes hard to tell if Britt reciprocates her feelings in quite the same way. We’d love to see Brittana together forever, but we’re still not sure if their high school romance will ultimately last.
Mike and Tina
Without a doubt, Mike (Harry Shum Jr.) and Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) are the most steady and drama-free of all the Glee couples. If anyone has a chance of making it long-term after graduation, logic tells us it will most likely be them.
However, we’re just not as emotionally attached to Tike as we are to some of Glee’s other core couples. Sure, they haven’t had all the drama, but that also means they haven’t gotten to experience all the emotional highs and lows that can come with a relationship, either. Would these two find more romance and passion if they started dating other people?
Sam and Mercedes.
After Mercedes (Amber Riley) refused to get back together with Sam (Chord Overstreet) over the guilt she felt after kissing him while still dating Shane, it seemed like Samcedes just might be over for good. We originally left them out of this poll, since we hadn't realized they officially got back together in Season 3 — but fan response to seeing them left out was so strong that we quickly added them back in! The fans love them some Samcedes: message received.
There's no doubt that Sam and Mercedes are an awesome couple when they are together. Plus, after they went to prom together, it certainly seems like their flame could be rekindled in the future. Of course, with Mercedes landing a record deal and heading off for Los Angeles — Samcedes is just one more couple that will have try things long distance come Season 4. But hey, what's to keep Sam from making the move to LA to join her after he graduates? We'd say these two totally still have a shot.
We want to know what you think. Out of Glee’s reigning power couples, which of the duos do you think will stay together the longest?
