Jonathan Groff

Glee character: Jesse St. James
Date of birth: March 26, 1985
Hometown: Ronks, Pennsylvania
Currently residing in: Los Angeles
Education: Conestoga Valley High School

Jonathan makes his debut on Glee in the second half of the first season as the male lead of Vocal Adrenaline, but this is hardly his first time working with several of the cast members. He starred with Lea Michele (Rachel) in the original Broadway cast of Spring Awakening, while Jenna Ushkowitz (Tina) understudied with the show. The role earned him a Tony nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Musical in 2007, though he lost out to David Hyde Pierce (Curtains). Damn you, Niles! He started his career on One Life to Live, until his character had a drug-induced heart attack while driving a car and subsequently crashed and died. (Not that old chestnut again!) Jonathan has extensive stage acting credentials, including performances in productions of Hair, The Bacchae, and The Sound of Music. He will co-star in the upcoming Robert Redford-directed film, The Conspirator, about the Lincoln assassination, and recently starred with Demetri Martin and Eugene Levy in the Ang Lee film Taking Woodstock. Between that and Hair, he certainly has no problem embracing his inner hippie!

Random factoid: Some earlier jobs of his included being a ride operator at Dutch Wonderland and a counselor at a theater camp in York, PA, where he taught acting to 11- and 12-year-olds. That's a lot of time spent with annoying children!
