At one point, How I Met Your Mother star and Glee guest star Neil Patrick Harris seemed destined to be remembered solely for his iconic child role in the television series Doogie Howser, M.D., for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination in 1989. Not that being remembered for the now-beloved dramedy would have been the worst fate in the world, but boy, has he ever proven any naysayers wrong and transcended that role! Following that part, he turned to theatre, where his Broadway roles included starring in Proof opposite Anne Heche, Cabaret opposite Deborah Gibson, and in the revival of Stephen Sondheim's controversial Assassins. He also appeared in a number of made-for-TV movies and co-starred with Tony Shaloub in the short-lived sitcom Stark Raving Mad. But the role that would thrust him back into the spotlight was that of... himself. He played an exaggerated, libidinous version of himself in the stoner comedy Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle, and his hilarious performance put him back on the map. From there, he was cast as womanizing Barney on the sitcom How I Met Your Mother — for which he's earned three Emmy nominations — and has been pretty much unstoppable ever since. Neil has since hosted the Tony and Emmy awards, starred in Joss Whedon's Emmy Award-winning musical web series Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, and has voiced characters in Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and the upcoming film version of The Smurfs. An '80s icon doing voice work for a beloved '80s cartoon — how fitting!
Random factoid: Neil made a surprise appearance at the 2010 Academy Awards by performing the opening musical number. Is there anything the man can't do?
