Glee’s Charice Comes Out: I’m a Lesbian

In a tearful video interview this weekend, Glee guest star Charice — who played Rachel’s (Lea Michele) rival Sunshine in Season 2 — announced that she is a lesbian.

The Filipino pop star, heralded by Oprah as “the most talented girl in the world,” shared the news on the Filipino ABC-CBN program The Buzz.“Charice, are you a lesbian?” a serious-looking show host asks her.

“Yes. I am a lesbian,” the 21 year old singer replies. “What is the problem with that? Because for me, I don’t think there’s a problem with that.”

The petite pop star, who sported long locks during her Glee stint, now has a boyish pixie cut. Philippine Star reports that she was seen recently wearing “men’s attire” and holding hands with another girl.

“Now I feel free,” Star quotes Charice as saying. “I can go out of the house without fear and certain that I’m not stepping on anybody’s toe[s].”

However, not everyone has been supportive. Charice reveals that she has become estranged from her mother, Raquel Pempengco, and she’s currently living at the home of a family friend. Her grandmother, too, is having difficulty with the news, but Charice says she hopes both her mother and grandmother will eventually come to accept her.

In her interview, Charice apologized to fans who are not able to understand or accept her sexuality. “But to those who can accept me, thank you very much,” she said. “We are all equal, whether you are gay or straight.”
