Glee’s Cory Monteith Tribute: What Is Mercedes’ Tearjerking Song?

So far, the song list for Glee’s Season 5, Episode 3: “The Quarterback” tribute to the late Cory Monteith (Finn), who passed away suddenly in July — has been kept closely under wraps. Nothing’s confirmed yet, but Santana (Naya Rivera) is rumored to be singing “If I Die Young” by The Band Perry.

We also know that Mercedes (Amber Riley) will be singing an extremely emotional tune, though which song she’s singing is also unknown. However, rumors are flying on Twitter and on various Glee fan sites that Mercedes will sing The Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand By You” — the very same song that Finn himself performed back in Season 1 declaring his devotion to the unborn child he, at the time, thought was his daughter.

Amber has not confirmed whether or not she’s singing “I’ll Stand By You,” but she did reveal during a September 12 episode of The Ellen DeGeneres show that her solo from the Cory tribute will be a familiar tune for Glee fans.

“Yeah, I did,” she told Ellen, after the host asked if she broke down and cried while filming the episode. “Singing the song to him, the specific song that I’m singing, it’s very touching. And people are going to recognize this song.”

It’s not a confirmation of “I’ll Stand By You,” but it definitely doesn’t contradict the report, either.

But whatever the case, Amber wanted to make sure people knew that filming the Cory tribute wasn’t all tears and heartbreak.

“We also were laughing and reminiscing while we were there, watching old videos of Cory dancing, and our first trip to New York on a private plane, and how goofy we were. It was times of laughter, also.”
