Goat On Freeway Stops New Jersey Commuters For Two Hours (VIDEO)

We’ve all been there, you’re driving into work and all of a sudden, boom! A giant traffic jam. You sheepishly call the office to explain why you’ll be late, but if you were a commuter in New Jersey yesterday, your boss might not buy your excuse. It seems an escaped goat created a two hour traffic jam along one of the busiest stretches of freeway.

According to city spokesman Stan Eason, the small female goat managed to elude five Jersey City police officers for almost two hours by jumping back and forth over a central divider on the Pulaski Skyway, disrupting traffic in both directions.

While attempting to avoid the gamboling goat, police say four vehicles were involved in minor accidents. Luckily, there were no injuries. Eason says, "A call came in: `There was a motor vehicle accident, and there's a goat running around on the skyway."

But it’s all in a day’s work for New Jersey police, says Eason. “We had full-sized bucked deer running around in the metropolis downtown...about two years ago...so nothing surprises us."

Eventually officers were able to secure the goat as she became tires. Officials are still trying to determine where she came from. Given her ear marking by the U.S. Agriculture Service, it’s likely that she may have escaped from a truck headed to a slaughterhouse, Eason said.

The goat, who has been dubbed “Sky” by the New Jersey Police Department, is currently at the Liberty Humane Society animal shelter. Eason says, "If it can survive running around the Pulaski Skyway for two hours, and then winds up in a slaughterhouse, it's kind of sad. But if someone claims her, she is private property, so there's not much we can do."
