Godzilla Sequel Already in the Works After Monster Box Office Draw (VIDEO)

Godzilla stomped its competition at the box office, so it's only smart business that Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have already greenlit a sequel — to try to cash in on that gigantic success a second time.

Deadline has confirmed the second film is in development.

The monster pic, written by Max Borenstein and directed by Gareth Edwards, grossed $196.6 million dollars in its first weekend, the biggest worldwide opening of the year so far. It also wooed moviegoers into buying more expensive IMAX tickets, especially overseas.

This reboot stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, and Ken Watanabe, among others.

Technically, the film hasn't surpassed the $379 million worldwide box office earnings of 1998's Godzilla — the last American film based on the Japanese franchise — but it's already more than halfway there after just one weekend.

Plus, the new version has earned better reviews than its predecessor. Godzilla currently holds a 73 percent Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a score of 62 on Metacritic, and a B+ CinemaScore. Not bad at all for a popcorn-friendly summer blockbuster!

The question now is, what are the next cities to fall victim to the mutant lizard's destruction?
