The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced its nominees for the 2014 Golden Globe Awards on Thursday, December 12, via Zoe Saldana, Olivia Wilde, and comedian Aziz Ansari in tow.

Aside from serving as our must-see-movie guide for the next couple of months, the nominations, alongside the Screen Actors Guild Award announcements on December 11, mark the start of movie awards season — what's really the most wonderful time of the year. Shortly after, the Critics’ Choice Awards noms are released, and then it’s all red carpets all the time until March.

But the Golden Globes aren’t just for movie buffs! They also grant awards for small screen achievements. Last year saw big wins for cable, with virtually all major awards going to Showtime’s Homeland and House of Lies and HBO’s Girls and Game Change.

This year's lineup is a great mix of cable and network shows, and the movie nominations honor many of the highly buzzed-about blockbusters. We recommend binge-watching all of these great shows and camping out at a movie theater before these awards, which takes place on Thursday, January 12 at 8 a.m. ET on NBC. Oh, and in case you need another reason to watch, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are reprising their role as hosts for the event.
