Fans have been thinking about True Detective Season 2 since before the first season even finished. Because of the show's anthology format, we can expect a whole new set of characters next year, which means fans are already making their casting wish list and checking it twice.
There have also been hints that the second season will feature female characters in more central roles which, of course, got us thinking about actresses we'd love to see on True Detective. Given the caliber of the show's Season 1 stars, its popularity, and the fact that it's a limited commitment for the actors involved, we've thrown caution to the wind for this list. A-list movie stars? Yeah, why not!
So read through our five top picks, and then share your own True Detective Season 2 dream cast in the comments below.
The woman many know as Cat Stark is out of a regular role on Game of Thrones thanks to a little something called the Red Wedding. We'd love to see her return to HBO for True Detective. We know she can play anything from tough to compassionate with the best of them, and it would be nice to see her in a more central role than Cat was ever given.
This gorgeous breakout star scored an Oscar for her first ever film role. How to follow that up? Well, what about an Emmy? We want Lupita to get cast in basically all the things, and True Detective would let her tackle a very different role from the 12 Years a Slave character that earned her so much attention.
J.Law may be the star everyone wants to be besties with, but she's more than an adorable personality. She's not the second-youngest Best Actress Oscar winner for nothing, and anyone who saw her first Oscar-nominated role in Winter's Bone knows she can handle darkness and grit. We'd love to see Jennifer try her hand at crafting a character over eight episodes, and she's really got a talent for playing "hard women." Katniss Everdeen: Detective? Yes, please.
Dame Helen Mirren recently took home the Golden Globe for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie for TV movie Phil Spector. Maybe she'd be willing to try her luck in the category again, this time in a mini-series? She'd certainly bring buzz, interest, and even more prestige thanks star power, and of course we all know this legendary actress can handle anything the writers throw at her.
