Reese Witherspoon never ceases to amaze us. From shocking us with her vocal skills in Walk the Line to dropping the F-bomb while trying to pronounce model Cara Delevingne’s name during the 2014 Met Gala, this Tennessee-native is just a bag of tricks, y’all!
So imagine our surprise when we caught a glimpse of Reese’s shocking makeunder for her role in her latest film, Devil’s Knot. The 38-year-old actress dug deep into her roots to play Pam Hobbs, a real-life mom of one of three boys who were murdered in 1993 in West Memphis, Arkansas.
"It's unreal how generous she was and how she completely allowed herself to become this Southern mom," Devil's Knot director Atom Egoyan dishes to E! Online. "That to me was awe-inspiring and it was to the other actors as well. She was part of this ensemble and she really wanted it to be as authentic as possible."
In the film, Reese dresses in simple clothing and wears makeup only to make it seem like she’s not wearing any at all. Oh, the magic of foundation! "I think that's a huge statement to her quality as an actress, to assume a role like this and to be so invested in it and at the same time be modest about it," Atom adds.
"It's not a traditional role. The film doesn't center around her…But she saw this was a story that needed to be told and committed herself to it."
Not only did Reese fully immerse herself, she also became the set’s expert on all things Southern. "She wanted to make sure that the story was told in the South [they shot the film in Atlanta] and that it shouldn't resort to clichés," Atom said. “She was sort of obsessed by how people looked. That was so great. I loved that.”
Maybe there’s a future for Reese in film costume design? You never know. This woman has so many skills, we can’t even keep track of them!
