Everything old is new again — including The Goonies! In April, the 1985 film's director, Richard Donner, revealed that a sequel is in the works — and now, star Sean Astin says he and fellow Goonies alum Corey Feldman are up for a reprise performance.
The original film — co-written by Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus — sees a group of kids uncover a mystical Spanish treasure map as they try to save their neighborhood from demolition. The adventure flick earned $61 million at the box office and has since become a cult classic.
"My first thought when Dick said he was doing [a sequel] was like, 'Alright, maybe this time it's true!' I hope it's true," Sean tells E! Online. "I certainly like the idea of doing it. I don't know if I'd be in it or not. If they really wanted us to be in it, I'm sure there would be some way to work it out."
And, as a longtime friend of Corey, Sean can speak on the Surreal Life reality star's behalf: "Oh, he's fired up. He's ready to go."
The 43-year-old also reveals that the children of the original film's characters may be the focus of the follow-up. "I think the audience may be split on that, so they're trying to figure it out."
Hey, new protagonists or not, we'll take any return to the Goon Docks that we can get!
