Uh ohhh! Is Blake Lively (Serena)'s film career stalling out just as it's getting started?!
Why so glum, chum?
A couple of weeks ago we reported on news that Blake would be making a big move into the leading role in a Steven Soderbergh film called Side Effects, playing a young woman torn between her soon-to-be-released-from-prison husband (Channing Tatum!) and therapist (Jude Law!). Reception was mixed across the 'nets on the choice, but favor seemed to land on Blake's side, with the bulk of the defense referencing her fine, fine work in non-Gossip Girl roles like The Town. (Us, we argued WITH the GG experience! That stint at Ostroff was no joke, a'ight?)
But now, a week after the film's chief financier, Annapurna Pictures, threatened to pull out of the flick for unspecified reasons ― rumored to be Blake's casting, but never confirmed ― word is that the part has gone to some unenviable competition: recently Oscar-nominated dynamo, Rooney Mara, who has already signed on, according to Deadline.
As of right now, it's unclear whether or not Annapurna is re-attached to the flick, which means it coulda had NADA to do with Blake (that's our inclination, as staunch LIVELY FANS, naturally), orrr it could mean that Blake's casting was just a rumor from the start. (Or she had a conflict come up! Or she was always second in line to Rooney! Or... so many options, guys, soooo many options!)
Still... we're bummed to see it play out as it has ― and we still think the role would have been great for her. (Sure, Lisbeth Salander will do fine too, okay...)
That's showbiz? Whatever, Blake... you still got Oliver Stone in your camp!
