Wow, Gossip Girl would have been a hugely different show if Ed Westwick had gotten his way. When the actor first auditioned for the nighttime soap, he wasn’t trying out to be the iconic Chuck Bass. Can you imagine a world where Chuck’s looks weren’t smoldering and his voice wasn’t a low growl? That’s not a world we would want to live in.

Well, according to The Hollywood Reporter, that was nearly a reality. When the British actor first read for a part, it was for a different leading man — Nate Archibald! “Ed Westwick came in and blew us away. He originally read for Nate, but Stephanie and I looked at each other and wrote, "Chuck?" on a piece of paper,” show co-creator Josh Schwartz says.

But that wasn’t the only thing funky about Ed’s audition. Josh continues, “Once we cast him, he had to figure out his green card. We got several calls that he actually wasn't going to get it in time.” Adds co-creator Stephanie Savage, “The network was like: ‘You have to have a backup choice. We can't delay production. It would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.’”

Wow, so how close were they to an Ed-less Upper East Side? Well, not as close as you’d think, Josh says. “[W]e refused to make the pilot if Ed wasn't Chuck Bass.”

Let’s all take a moment to say Amen to that.
