Ask any Chair shipper worth her silk bow, and she’ll tell you: Chuck (Ed Westwick) and Blair (Leighton Meester) have always been endgame on Gossip Girl.

Forget Dan (Penn Badgley), forget Eva, forget any other distraction that momentarily derailed the two lovebirds, who finally tied the knot in the series finale on December 17. Louis (Hugo Becker) and Nate (Chace Crawford) were serious relationships for Blair, but they are mere notches on Blair’s love post, and neither were ever meant to be lasting loves. Rather, everyone else was like part of a 12-step program to happiness for the two formerly star-crossed lovers.

But is that just us shipping all over the page, or are these things fundamentally true? Turns out, it’s the latter. Executive producer Stephanie Savage tells E! Online, “I think it was a conversation up until the end of last season among all the writers. We wanted to write a season-five finale that would point us in the right direction. But for me and Josh Schwartz, we always felt that those guys were endgame for each other. Always.”

Was Dan ever a possibility? Dair shippers would be quick to defend the love he and Blair shared as the only healthy and true relationship either Dan or Blair ever really had. There was real support and affection there — not to mention a shared love of obscure movies and obfuscation. TV Line’s Michael Ausiello asked Stephanie if she had ever considered the two as a future, final coupling. “Um… nope! [Laughs]”  Sorry, Dair lovers. Chair wins. Again.
