We don’t know about you, but we had heartburn watching Blair’s juggling act in Gossip Girl Season 4, Episode 16, “While You Weren’t Sleeping.” At least her wardrobe was impeccable, aside from that little incident with the mismatched shoes.... One fabric in particular caught our eye: Blair and her minions were all sporting some form of tweed.
In case you’re unfamiliar, tweed is an unfinished wool known for its rough feel and ragged edges. Different colored yarns are woven together in diagonal patterns to create the colorful effect you see above in Blair’s dress and in her minion’s blazer.
Tweed is a traditional material, often used for classic shapes like Blair’s sheath. It’s ideal for the workplace, and totally captures the Upper East Side vibe. No wonder the Gossip gals in this episode were all over it!
Tweed isn’t just for the corporate jet set, though. As long as it’s lined, this textile is both warm and comfortable — perfect for the chilly transition from winter to spring, especially in lighter colors. Best of all, tweed is on sale this time of year, as stores make way for spring merchandise.
True, we wouldn’t exactly label tweed as “trendy”, but there are ways to adopt this versatile fabric into a young, hip wardrobe. Look for unique silhouettes, for instance. The dresses we picked all strike a contemporary note, with unusual necklines or bodices.
A conventional pencil skirt works well in tweed; pair it with a fun and flirty top for maximum effect. Blazers are another tweed staple, but avoid the typical suit jacket. Select coats with a body con shape, or with ornamentation like belts and ruffles. Maybe even branch out and try a funky vest!
