Photo: It's back to the Upper East Side for Episode 4.3, "The Undergraduates." On her first day at Columbia, Blair attempts to gain membership into an ultra-exclusive social club, Hamilton House, but she’s in for a few big surprises. Serena begins to suspect that Juliet (guest star Katie Cassidy) is intentionally sabotaging her life and that it may have something to do with Nate. Rufus is worried about Dan and decides to take matters into his own hands.
There’s a reason high school guidance counselors urge students to consider moving away for college: stay in town for school, and it’s tough to escape the past. Everyone on Gossip Girl discovered that the hard way this week. Getting in as a fresh face is easy. Staying in once people know what you’re capable of — well, that’s another story.
Fashion’s Night Out
Serena and Blair start Columbia full of high hopes of maintaining a blissful, trouble-free BFF ‘ship. But of course they’ve only been on campus for 20 minutes before they find something to fight over: access to the exclusive club Hamilton House. Queen B is graced with a key, while a shocked Serena is snubbed and left out in the cold. And the oh-so-sorry key master? That would be Juliet Sharp.
It soon becomes clear that missing out on Hamilton House cuts S out of Columbia’s A-list altogether — other key holders include once and future minions and a glowering Nate. But when Serena confronts Juliet, she insinuates that it was Blair who had S shut out.
At Fashion’s Night Out, Juliet soon has a Gossip Girl video blast (she does those now! Welcome to 2010, scandal) playing on all the TVs, showing S and B ripping each other’s hair out. But whoops — turns out S and B faked the fight to show Juliet as the man-stealing, two-faced, key-hoarding turbo skank she really is. Somehow, this makes Nate want to mack on her. But S does get her key, along with a room of her own in B’s apartment.
Daddy’s Night In
Rufus breaks the news to Dan that Milo’s not his — just in time for Lonely Boy to get a photo blast of his baby mama on the beach in St Bart’s. He decides to parent Milo anyway, and Vanessa agrees to move in to help him. But, as usual, just when they’ve finally managed to pick up the pieces, Hurricane Georgina sweeps back in. She explains to Dan that her real baby daddy is a Russian guy with a super scary Russian wife, who sent hit men after Georgina. So she decided to pull a Quinn (can we make Glee references, or is that too hopelessly Midwestern for Gossip Girl fans?) and name a stand-up guy as her fall guy.
Now, though, Georgina has dug down into the roiling black mass she calls a soul and extracted something resembling a maternal impulse. She collects Milo and takes him away, leaving poor Dan with nothing but a stuffed bunny. And Vanessa, who’s still moving in. That’ll go well.
In and Out
Over in Chuckville, we’re beginning to think he should have stayed a humble Parisian bar back. He’s got his adorable Eva ensconced in his penthouse and he’s ready to resume his life as Chuck Bass, but NYC’s not as happy to see him. Lily welcomes him with open arms (as she does with anyone she vaguely remembers was once related to her), but Rufus and Eric are another story — especially when Rufus learns the truth about Chuck and Jenny’s first meeting way back in Season 1.
Eva, who’s already had her confidence crushed by a chance meeting with Blair, nearly bolts when Chuck disses her to keep Rufus from telling her all his rapey ways. But after he comes clean, she decides to stick around and focus on the good man she met that summer, who as far as she can remember didn’t rape any teenagers at all. Happy ending! A completely unsustainable, headed-for-disaster happy ending!
On the Inside
So why did creepy Juliet do her best to ruin everyone’s night? Not just to lock down Nate, as he and Serena surmised (and why not? Crazier things have been done for Nate’s love — just ask Jenny). Turns out Juliet’s partner in crime is a criminal. She visits a friend in jail and tells him that the girls are going to be harder than she thought. What are they planning to do to the UES gang? Are they going to kill them? Or worse: make them poor? Never leave us, Crazy Juliet.
