Get yourself Gossip Girl edjumacated, friends! Learn about all the cultural references (pop and otherwise) you might have missed during Season 4, Episode 17, "Empire of the Son." If you don't know, now you know.

Empire of the Sun
This week's episode, "Empire of the Son," takes its name from the 1987 film Empire of the Sun. Directed by Steven Spielberg, it stars this week's Oscar winner Christian Bale as a young English boy struggling to survive in Shanghai under the Japanese occupation. He endures violence, imprisonment, starvation, and now we're bummed out. Thanks for making us look that up, Gossip Girl.

Joseph Beuys
Joseph Beuys was a mid-century German artist. Yes, there was an exhibit of his work at MoMA (including, we believe, this awesome felt-covered piano), but it just closed on February 22. Get with the times, Gossip Girl.

Joe's Pizza
"Famous" Joe's Pizza is a West Village institution. Given its location at 7 Carmine Street, about seven miles from the Upper East Side, we seriously doubt they deliver to Serena's pad. Of course, she's rich enough to have them set up a satellite location in her foyer if she wants.
