Gossip Girl is not Kelly Rutherford's first hit TV series. She was a regular on Generations and the 1990's incarnation of Melrose Place. But Rutherford has really come into her own as the complicated, social-climbing, former rock star groupie Lily Bass, mother of Serena and Erik van der Woodsen, on Gossip Girl. Rutherford has been married and divorced twice. She became the object of intense tabloid coverage when she filed for divorce from her second husband, German businessman Daniel Giersch, six months before giving birth to their second child, a girl, in June of 2009, and subsequently became involved in a contentious custody case.
