We’ve not seen Elena’s former babysitter charge April Young (Grace Phipps) traipsing around Mystic Falls in a dog’s age. But the actress behind the Vampire Diaries role will soon be lending her acting talents to a different horror project: a new indie film called Some Kind of Hate inspired by horror classics Nightmare on Elm Street and Let the Right One In. Read on to find out more!

The Hollywood Reporter just announced that Grace has been cast in the “new take on the slasher genre,” along with Ronen Rubinstein (It Felt Like Love) and Sierra McCormick (A.N.T. Farm). The script was co-written by first-time director Adam Egypt Mortimer and novelist Brian DeLeeuw (In This Way I Saved You) and will tell the story of “a tightly wound kid who is a favorite target for the local high school bullies. He is sent away to a remote reform school, where the teen accidentally summons a vengeful spirit — herself a victim of bullying — to exact retribution on his tormentors.” Awesome.

No word on exactly who Grace will play, but we’re pulling for the “vengeful spirit” role. Though we’re used to seeing her play the sweet teenager in both TVD and The Nine Lives of Chloe King, we think she could totally rock a villainous vibe. Filming begins on the film in L.A. this week.

We hope this doesn’t mean April is gone from Mystic Falls forever. Though we were never completely sold on her character, we think that has less to do with April Young’s potential and more to do with the limited role she was given to inhabit. With TVD gearing up for a Season 6 and Jeremy at least theoretically still enrolled as a student at Mystic Falls High with April, perhaps she will get a chance to become a more nuanced and fully-formed character in the upcoming season? Until then, we’ll just assume she’s escorting a Traveler Passenger on a tour of the town.

Are you as happy as we are to hear Grace has been cast in a new film? Do you hope to see April back on TVD in Season 6? Sound off in the comments below!

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
