Late last month FOX announced that they would be airing a three-hour live version of the musical Grease, perhaps trying to piggyback off of rival network NBC’s success with their live telecast of The Sound of Music earlier this year. NBC had previously announced that their musical of choice for 2015 would be Peter Pan, so we think the FOX execs were wise to pick Grease.
The 1971 musical preceded the 1978 movie starring Olivia Newton-John as Sandy and John Travolta as Danny, which is still popular with young audiences today, and FOX certainly has an expansive crop of young talent to choose from, should they like to stay close to home when casting the project. Though no casting decisions have been announced yet, with shows like Glee and American Idol, FOX shouldn’t have trouble filling the iconic roles.
Of course there’s no guarantee that FOX will cast any one from either of those shows, but we have to assume that they won’t exactly be ignoring that built-in talent pool either. At the FOX Fan Fronts in New York City on May 11, one fan asked Glee star Darren Criss (Blaine) if he would accept the role of Danny, should the network offer it to him. “I don’t know if that’s possible,” he said. “I’m on another show, how would I do it?”
Still, he didn’t totally discount the possibility either. “That’s an interesting idea though,” he admitted. Here’s the full exchange.
Darren’s Glee schedule for Season 6 would likely present some challenges should he get cast in Grease, but since the dramedy doesn’t even have a premiere date set yet, we suppose Darren could swing both projects if FOX really wanted him for the role of Danny.
As avid Glee watchers may remember, Glee tackled Grease back in Season 4, with Blake Jenner (Ryder) and the late Cory Monteith (Finn) both playing the male lead, but Darren as Danny has never been done before.
