To the relief of all of us Grey's Anatomy fans, Patrick Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo — the actors behind the medical drama's original power couple, Derek and Meredith — signed on for the show's prospective Seasons 11 and 12. That said, we're a bit surprised that Patrick re-upped for two more seasons, considering how invested he is in his racing career these days.
At the Rolex 24 race on January 25 in Daytona Beach, Florida, the 48-year-old star took time out of his racing schedule to explain his decision to continue both jobs.
"Grey's does a remarkable job scheduling around these races now, and I wouldn't be able to do it without them," The McDreamy actor told reporters, per the Associated Press. "The fact that they continue to let me race is remarkable in itself, so I am grateful for that and grateful to have employment that is known around the world. It gives me a platform to come and do this type of thing, and it helps the sponsors. I'm lucky to have the gig."
Indeed, he and his co-driver, Andrew Davis, plan on competing in all 13 events of the the upcoming United SportsCar Championship season.
When asked when he'll ditch acting altogether, Patrick quipped, "When I grow up, I want to race full time."
Well, we'll hate to see you leave our screens, P.D., but at least we can savor the next two seasons!
