Before the Season 8 finale, spoilers suggested that the character who would die in the plane crash was a “beloved” one, and it turned out to be Lexie (Chyler Leigh). The word “beloved” is also being used in this new spoiler, so it’s safe to say they aren’t joking around.
Let’s start with one of last season’s most popular theories: Adele. Is it her time? Here are three reasons why Richard’s (James Pickens Jr.) estranged wife might not be long for this world.
Richard has moved on. Throughout Season 9, something strange has happened to Richard. He seems happy! After years spent feeling guilty in his marriage, doing everything possible to try and make Adele happy despite her fading memory, Richard is smiling all the time now. Yes, Catherine Avery gets most of the credit for that, but his transition from doting husband to estranged husband has been impressively smooth. The timing seems right for him to move on without going through a messy divorce.
She’s already in a special care facility. Moving Adele from her home to the special care facility where she is now was a major psychological step for Richard. He was free to live his life independently for the first time in, well, ever. Adele has already found a new man who she says she loves in her facility. Her Alzheimer’s has progressed substantially, and she is sick. The circumstantial evidence alone points to Adele being the one to die.
She is beloved, but her death wouldn’t be shocking.Grey’s fans have had enough heartache for one year. We thought Henry’s death was a shocker in the Season 8 midseason finale, but we had no idea that Lexie and Mark (Eric Dane) (!) would be next. While Adele is beloved, and she won pretty much everyone’s heart with her and Richard’s duet of “My Funny Valentine,” we don’t think Shonda Rhimes would put her fans through any more earth-shattering news in 2012, which it would be if a main character died.
