Grey’s Anatomy’s Jesse Williams & Shonda Rhimes Team Up For New Documentary
The EPIX documentary follows Jesse, a former teacher, as he reports on the issues in America’s schools.
The five-part series also discusses the growing issue of at-risk youth ending up in prison due to a failed judicial system, as seen in this preview clip.
“We don’t allow minors to make a lot of decisions, but we allow them to waive rights that they can’t possibly comprehend,” the 34-year-old says about the Miranda rights.
“They can’t sign a contract, they couldn’t buy a car, but they can waive a right and talk about a crime that could put them in prison for the rest of their life,” says the public defender who has had to help many teenagers with this issue.
The BET Humanitarian Award recipient continues to discuss the importance for children to understand what it means to “waive their rights,” and how it can be detrimental to their future.
The documentary will also feature Rosario Dawson as she investigates the water crisis in Flint, Michigan as well as Peter Sarsgaard, who will dive deeper into America’s addiction crisis.
America Divided will debut this September on EPIX.
