Grey’s Anatomy Review: Rate Season 8, Episode 10: ”Suddenly”

We had to suffer through a long hiatus to get to Grey's Anatomy Season 8, Episode 10, "Suddenly." Was the wait worth it? Read on for the Wetpaint Entertainment review and then rate the episode yourself.

Warning: Major spoilers ahead.

Medically, this episode focused on tying up the cliffhangers from Season 8, Episode 9, "Dark Was the Night." Almost the entire staff of Seattle Grace-Mercy West spent the episode operating on the family that crashed into Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Alex's (Justin Chambers) ambulance — except for Teddy (Kim Raver) and Cristina (Sandra Oh), who finished the complicated heart surgery on Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Jackson (Jesse Williams)'s patient.

Meredith spent the episode rushing between all of the patients from the crash and, mostly, looking out for the oldest daughter, who survived the crash physically more-or-less unscathed, but had to watch her family die around her. In the end, all of the children survived, but the oldest daughter had to chose to take her father off of life support as she cried into Meredith's arms. It was a well acted, moving scene.

Meanwhile, Cristina faked cheer throughout working with Teddy, but then told Teddy about Henry's death as soon as the operation was over. This entire plotline was beautifully acted by both Sandra Oh and Kim Raver — Teddy's silent breakdown over Henry's body was particularly devestating.

This was also a great episode for Sara Ramirez, who radiated guilt and anger over Jackson's mistake in her (sadly very limited) scenes.

In true Grey's style, not everything was bad news. Alex and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) successfully saved the sick baby and continued their adorable mentor/mentee relationship. Bailey (Chanda Wilson) finally let hottie doc Ben in, just a little, and Lexie (Chyler Leigh) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) warmed up to Mark's (Eric Dane) new girlfriend, Julia, after she saved a kid's eye in the OR.

To top it off, the episode ended on a very high note, with Meredith and Derek getting Zola back!

Overall, we liked this episode. However, like Episode 9, it felt a bit disjointed. There were a number of interesting and well executed plotlines, but the episode didn't entirely cohere. The cheerfulness of the ending — especially the sudden and improbable return of Zola — felt out of place with the darker tone of the rest of the episode.

We give it 3.5 stars — but we're very happy MerDer got their baby back.
