This week’s Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 installment finally gave Japril fans reason to get hot under the collar — Jackson and April slept together again, over a year after their marriage petered out and their divorce turned contentious.

Now Jesse Williams and Sarah Drew are talking about their storyline’s sexual-if-not-romantic twist and what it means for the fate of these star-crossed surgeons.

In that March 16 episode — titled “Who Is He (And What Is He to You)?” — Jackson and April traveled to Bozeman, Montana, on a medical case. Jackson had an ulterior motive, though: He had tracked down his long-lost father.

It wasn’t until April made Jackson talk to his dad that he made a medical breakthrough in the case, and even though the surgery was more successful than the father-son chat, Jackson and April still celebrated that night… between the sheets!

Talking to TVGuide, actress Sarah Drew says she was surprised the ex-spouses had sex at the end of the episode.

“But not totally surprised,” she clarifies.

“They’re still so connected to one another, especially now that they have a child together and are roommates. And she really showed up for him in this episode in a way that I don’t think she has in their entire relationship so far.”

Surprising as the hookup may be, it did feel like the inevitable result of their reconnection with one another and rediscovery of each other throughout this episode, as the 36-year-old actress says.

“I think that having the opportunity away from the hospital to remember why these two people were each other’s person from before they even got together, just allows for a connection.”

“So it made sense that it culminates in falling into bed together, because there’s always going to be chemistry between the two of them,” she continues.

“There’s always going to be love there. They share a child. There’s so much that they’ve been through, and we’ve just had this kind of beautiful experience of April really showing up in a loving way for Jackson in a really heightened moment. So, it made sense that they would come together in this moment.”

So what’s ahead for this on-again off-again couple? Both actors are keeping that intel under lock and key, but they do say the relationship is still evolving.

“I can’t imagine [April and Jackson sleeping together] doesn’t draw them closer because if it doesn’t solidify or re-establish or reignite their romantic relationship, it for sure cements their platonic relationship,” Jesse Williams tells The Hollywood Reporter.

“They [do] need each other; they do want to be around each other; they do confide in each other,” the 35-year-old actor continues.

“They know things about each other that nobody else knows. They have the ability to listen that nobody else employs. They have to be — I mean, they’re in each other’s lives in a major way. That rift could have kept breaking and I think this kind of draws them back in a way.”

“They could either go back and be buried in uncertainty or confusion and be living together with their daughter, or it could lead to confusion about who they are to each other,” Sarah tells THR.

“Though it could also solidify their best friendship all over again and remind them how important they are as friends — or it could also totally rekindle their marriage. Any one of those options makes a lot of sense moving forward.”

Furthermore, as Sarah reveals to E! Online, what happened in Montana won’t stay in Montana.

“I don’t think it’s a thing that happened that is never thought about again or discussed again,” she says.

“I think it meant something important, but what exactly that leads to, you’ll just have to wait and see.”
