Grey Sloan Memorial Got a Makeover For ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 14
As it heads into its 14th season, Grey’s Anatomy ranks one of the oldest shows on network TV.
And because it’s Hollywood we’re talking about, that vintage means the show is due for a facelift.
Wait until you see the new Grey Sloan Hospital!
After surviving storms, earthquakes, explosions, and floods, the hospital sustained serious damage in the Season 13 finale — after Stephanie set fire to her captor.
Steph knew the guy was gonna die when she torched him, but she didn’t expect him to collapse next to a tank of flammable gas.
Luckily for her, she didn’t die in the ensuing blast and fire; but the flames spread rapidly throughout the hospital.
Here in Season 14, Bailey is using the damage as an excuse to add her personal touch to the hospital decor.
“It’s another way for Bailey to put her stamp on things. She ends up going pretty all-out in changing colors, upgrading rooms, and changing the feel of the hospital.”
From what we can tell, there’s new furniture in the waiting area, a new reception desk, a wavy texture on one wall, new blue-gray paint on another, new oversized photos, potted plants all around, and even a vertical garden.
It’s a lot of change for the Grey Sloan employees to process, as Kevin McKidd tells EW.
“Some people have issues with it,” he says.
And it’s not just this lobby area that gets renovated, as we’ll see in one of the first Season 14 episodes.
“Bailey is trying to make sure that everybody is safe, is giving instructions, and in the middle of that, an entire chunk of the wall falls out,” Jessica Capshaw reveals, laughing.
“So she just adds, ‘Perhaps that area as well.’”
We’ve seen a few updates to the hospital over the years, actually.
At some point, for example, the hospital’s white walls got a beige paint job.
Then, in Season 12, the production team replaced the McDream House set with a new cadaver set.
Meanwhile, we’ve seen less and less of Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center — massive, glassy atrium that was synonymous with Grey’s walk-and-talks — probably because it’s a functioning medical center that sparked outcry for letting the show film there.
These days, Grey’s has been filming its exterior shots at West Los Angeles College, which even hosted multiple fire trucks and emergency vehicles for that fiery Season 13 finale (much to the wonderment of college students on campus).
But the more things change, the more they stay the same, and you’ll see some familiar sights again when Grey’s Anatomy starts airing again…
As we previously reported, the Season 14 cast and crew have packed up and moved to Seattle to film on-location exterior shots — including the real-life house that plays Mer’s childhood home — after a decade staying in Los Angeles and using green screen technology to fill in Emerald City vistas.
We bet it’s gonna be a great season… but we know it’s gonna be a great-looking season.
Grey’s Anatomy Season 14 premieres on Thursday, September 28, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
