Jaina Lee Ortiz Cast in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Firefighter Spin-Off
We finally have a face to go with the name — or at least the idea — of ABC’s upcoming Grey’s Anatomy spin-off.
The firefighter-centric drama, which is still untitled, will premiere next season with Rosewood alum Jaina Lee Ortiz in a female lead role.
Keep reading to learn more about the show and its first cast member.
We first learned about this new show — the first Grey’s spin-off since Private Practice premiered 10 years ago — during ABC’s upfront presentation in May.
“Set in a Seattle firehouse, the latest series from the executive producers of Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder follows a group of heroic firefighters,” the network said in a press release.
“From the captain to the newest recruit, we follow these brave men and women as they risk their lives and their hearts both in the line of duty and off the clock.”
The 10-episode series will premiere midseason, the network says, so expect a premiere anytime somewhere in the January to March 2018 range.
We’ll get a sneak peek before then, though. Deadline says this spin-off’s cast — which is expected to comprise all-new characters — will be introduced in a Grey’s episode this fall.
And one of those cast members, we’re learning now, is Jaina Lee Ortiz.
The 30-year-old is best known for playing Det. Annalise Villa on the procedural drama Rosewood, which FOX canceled in May after two seasons.
In fact, Deadline says Jaina has been “in demand” in Hollywood ever since that cancellation.
Deadline also notes that Jaina is also a bit of a Hollywood rarity — in that she’s never had a small role on TV — only recurring or series regular parts.
She starred in the canceled Amazon drama The After, for example, and she recurred on USA’s Shooter.
Just this month, she appeared as herself in the hit comedy Girls Trip — which, coincidentally, featured Kate Walsh, the lead star of the only other Grey’s spin-off.
This rising TV star was born in California but was raised in the Bronx. She started learning dance as a kid, and taught and performed internationally.
In 2010, she competed on the second season of the VH1 reality show Scream Queens — no relation to the Ryan Murphy show! — and came in second place.
Jaina isn’t the only notable name that signed on the dotted line for this spin-off so far.
Earlier this month, Paris Barclay joined the product as producing director and executive producer.
Paris has produced shows like Pitch, Sons of Anarchy, and The Bastard Executioner; and he’s directed episodes of Empire, Glee, and Scandal.
Anyway, now that Jaina is onboard, what are the odds she can convince her Rosewood co-star Morris Chestnut to join her?
Grey’s Anatomy Season 14 premieres on Thursday, September 28, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. The Grey’s spin-off premieres in early 2018.
