ABC Orders ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Firefighter Spin-Off to Air in 2018
Take a good look at the firefighters you see battling the Grey Sloan blaze in the Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 finale — they could be your next Shondaland fixations.
ABC is developing a Grey’s spin-off about firefighters in Seattle.
“Set in a Seattle firehouse, the latest series from the executive producers of Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder follows a group of heroic firefighters,” ABC says in a press release.
“From the captain to the newest recruit, we follow these brave men and women as they risk their lives and their hearts both in the line of duty and off the clock.”
In what will be the first Grey’s Anatomy spin-off in 10 years — yes Grey’s is old enough to have two spin-offs a decade apart — this firefighter show will premiere in early 2018.
Better yet, the yet-untitled drama got a series order, meaning it is bypassing the pilot process and definitely coming to TV.
“No one can interweave the jeopardy firefighters face in the line of duty with the drama in their personal lives quite like Shonda [Rhimes], and Grey’s signature Seattle setting is the perfect backdrop for this exciting spin-off,” ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said.
Shonda herself won’t write the show, but it’s in hands just as capable.
Stacy McKee — who has written for Grey’s since Season 1, currently serves as co-showrunner, and penned this Season 13 finale — is in charge of the spin-off.
Given the show’s 2018 premiere date, it’ll likely air alongside Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal in ABC’s #TGIT block after How to Get Away With Murder finishes its fourth season next spring.
At that point, Shondaland could have six shows on ABC: the three aforementioned veterans, the firefighter spinoff, the Romeo-and-Juliet retelling Still Star-Crossed (which premieres on May 29), and the just-greenlit legal drama For the People.
The last Grey’s Anatomy spin-off, Private Practice, lasted six seasons — so we have high hopes for this firefighter show.
Maybe Shonda Rhimes & Co. are going the Dick Wolf route. We already have the equivalent of Seattle Med and Seattle Fire… could Seattle Justice be next?
The Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 finale — Episode 24, “True Colors” — airs Thursday, May 11 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
