So... who saw that one coming? Shonda Rhimes teased that something “life-changing” would happen to April Kepner in the penultimate episode of Grey’s Anatomy Season 9 (Episode 23: “Readiness Is All”), but when her paramedic beau Matthew got down on one knee to propose to our favorite neurotic doc, we were still pretty shocked.

But that probably had something to do with the fact that there was a flashmob involved! Yes, Matthew organized a proposal around The Proclaimers’ “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” and every Grey Sloan Memorial doc was there to witness the magic. You really had to be there to witness it because it even put a smile on dark-and-twisty Meredith’s face! Perhaps Alex put it best: she finally “found someone who is as dorky as she is.”

However, that doesn’t mean we’re giving up on Jackson and April just yet. Don’t think we didn’t catch the lovesick looks he gave her when she said “yes” and hugged her new fiance Matthew. Not to mention that Shonda also said “in the finale, all of that is brought into question in a huge way.”

Uh oh. Does this mean Jackson is the doc who fights for his life in the Season 9 finale? Think about it: If Jackson’s life is in danger, it might force April to finally come to terms with her feelings for her former best friend and lover. However, this postmortem interivew with Sarah Drew has us thinking otherwise.

"April isn't involved with that." Sarah told THR when asked about whose life would hang in the balance at the season's end. "However, it's very scary and it's very much hanging in balance at the end of the finale. We don't know what's going to happen -- and the audience won't either -- until we come back for Season 10."
