When Mark Sloan died this season on Grey’s Anatomy, we were devastated. Not only was it heartbreaking to see him go, but honestly, we also miss McSteamy’s shirtless scenes and sarcasm. Fret not, though — portrayer Eric Dane is back and better than ever (albeit in camo and not his birthday suit) on his new TNT show, The Last Ship.

Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with Eric recently in New York City, and he dished that “it’s outstanding” and that he thinks “it’s going to be one of the best hours of television when we launch it.” Based on the new trailer below, truer words have never been spoken.

According to Deadline, Eric plays Navy Captain Tom Chandler, “who is authoritative and decisive, but also fair and courageous,” and he and his crew are among the few survivors after a global catastrophe. Based on William Brinkley’s popular novel, this tale of survival is action-packed and dramatic — especially since Transformers’ director Michael Bay is the executive producer.

It’s basically a Hollywood blockbuster, with snowmobiles and helicopters racing, people manning battle stations, explosions, gunshots, and more. "Take 'em out!" Eric yells, though people being taken out is the problem that got them there in the first place.

As we learn, Eric’s colleague, Dr. Rachel Scott (Rhona Mitra) — a sexy brunette, at that — is being chased after and she’s keeping secrets from him. Apparently she is trying to make a vaccine, attempting to find a cure for a mysterious virus. The duo discovers that Russia no longer has a functioning government, as most of the population is dying or dead, and what started as a “Phase 2 virus” is now in “Phase 6: global pandemic.” Eek.

Basically, it’s like 28 Days Later meets Battleship meets Transformers, and it premieres in Summer 2014. Yes, that’s a long time to wait, but the exciting part is that it got picked up and we’ll get to see him back on TV in a year. Plus, former Firefly and Chuck star Adam Baldwin is his right-hand man, Slattery, and they’re sure to be a crack team.

“This is our last mission — now our duty is to the entire world,” Eric says. “For our future, for our families, for all of humanity. Our mission now is simple: stay alive until we find that cure.”

We’ll be counting down the minutes until the cure... and the show in general. Will you tune in? Check out the trailer below, and then hit the comments with your thoughts!
