It’s hard to believe that Grey’s Anatomy is over for the season, but last night, the Season 9 finale rocked us to our core. Though it was a slow build, the episode was fantastic, shocking us with unexpected twists and turns, breakups, and one heartwarming make up. However, this was just a cap to an overall great season (minus the lull of the “buy the hospital” plot), and there were plenty of excellent episodes along the way.
In preparation for Season 10, which premieres this fall, we’ve rounded up our Top 5 favorite episodes from this season. We’re going to watch them all again during the hiatus, and maybe even the whole season. We already have Grey Sloan Memorial withdrawal...
Check out our five faves below, and then hit the comments with your own!
Season 9, Episode 2: “Remember the Time”
Even though we knew Mark’s fate after Season 9, Episode 1: “Going, Going, Gone,” the closure of his death — and seeing him alive and well during a brief surge — was perfect. We didn’t stop crying during this episode between all of our emotions about Mark, everyone’s stories from the crash; Cristina’s breakdown (Sandra Oh for all the Emmys), and Arizona losing her leg.
Season 9, Episode 5: “Beautiful Doom”
This drama-packed episode featured one of our core favorite duos: Meredith and Cristina. While Mer was beside herself after trying to save a woman pinned under a car, eerily similar to how her sister, Lexie, died in the woods post-crash; Cristina’s mentor Dr. Parker has a heart attack in the middle of surgery (which she has to then finish solo) and dies; and then at the end of the episode, Cristina comes back to Seattle. Our hearts swelled, and the acting was on point.
Season 9, Episode 7: “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”
This episode was a mix of heartwarming (Meredith tells Derek she’s pregnant with a T-shirt for Zola that says “World’s Best Big Sister”) and heartbreaking (Jackson and April break up after a pregnancy scare and a proposal takeback), featuring stellar performances from the aforementioned actors. Notably, this is also the episode where Arizona returned to work and plays with Sofia for the first time post-amputation and when Owen asks Cristina for a divorce. Drama-rama.
Season 9, Episode 10: “Things We Said Today”
Bailey ran away from her wedding, but it wasn’t because she didn’t love Ben — she had to try to save Richard’s wife, Adele. Though she and Meredith are able to help her, in a sad twist, she passes away at the end of the episode. The saddest (and in turn, the best-acted part) of the episode? When Meredith and Richard watch Bailey and Ben dance... as he pictures him and Adele dancing to “Funny Valentine.” We cry just thinking about it.
Season 9, Episode 21: “Sleeping Monster”
This Bailey-centric episode (and the one before it, Season 9, Episode 20: “She’s Killing Me”) showed off portrayer Chandra Wilson’s acting skills and was tense and dramatic in the best ways. The doctors were trying to fight for Bailey during a CDC investigation while Bailey was fighting to help her dying patient, but no one was able to accomplish what they wanted until the end. Though she did carry a MRSA infection that killed three of her patients, it was because of the residual Pegasus problems (part of the “buy the hospital” snafu) that the disease was transferred — faulty gloves. Chandra deserves so many Emmys for this arc.
Season 9 Finale: Episode 24, “Perfect Storm”
Technically this makes the list six instead of five, but we wanted to note some of the highlights of the finale, too. In no particular order: Meredith giving birth to a healthy baby boy, coaching Shane through her post-labor surgery before Bailey saved the day; Jackson and April addressing their feelings after two amazing scenes (Jackson emerging from an explosion and April freaking out, and her telling him she loves him); Callie and Arizona’s heart-wrenching cheating confrontation; and as sad as we are, Cristina and Owen’s breakup and Richard’s shocking potential death. A great end to a season of fantastic episodes.
