Yesterday, Grey’s Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey had fans up in arms when he dissed the hit ABC medical drama, saying he’s not “necessarily bored with the show,” but that you get “exhausted...telling the same story over and over” and his racing is more exciting. While that seemingly hinted he would leave the show after Season 10, he cleared up his comments after the 2013 Television Critics Association Racing Le Mans presentation.

“I love the show. I love doing the show and I love working but, I mean ... I am extremely passionate about racing. It does something that acting doesn't do,” he revealed to The Huffington Post. Part of it also boils down to being lucky to be working at all.

When asked about staying on the show to fund his racing, he didn’t deny it, saying, “Yeah, to a certain extent. I mean, it's a job and it's a thing, but, uh ... it's so hard to get a job anymore. They're not making a lot of movies, so I'm lucky to have a job.” However, he notes that the filming schedule (10 months out of the year) takes up a lot of my time, in turn preventing him from doing a lot of other things, which is “challenging.” That doesn’t mean he isn’t still excited about the show, though.

“You know ... I'm still having fun. I think this year coming back into Season 10, there is a feeling of great celebration within the cast and with the writers,” he said, but noted it doesn’t come without its hardships. “It's a grind — we're doing 15-16 hour days and people are exhausted. It's not an easy job. It is what it is. I'm not complaining, it's just challenging. It's been 10 years — you know, 200 episodes.”

At the end of the day, he’s happy to have great fans, and doesn’t mind that they only perceive him as McDreamy. He is ready for people to see him in a different light, though, which he explains is why he goes off and does other things. Notably, he just wants people to know that racing is a profession and not just a hobby, and with his new docu-series — and generally doing well on the track — Patrick hopes to change that mentality, making himself credible as a driver.

What do you think, Grey’s fans? Do you think Patrick will still stick around, or will he head into racing full-time? Sound off on his new comments below.
