For the first time in Grey’s Anatomy history, Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd were the happiest couple on the show in the Season 9 finale. Though it was a rough and emotional journey (when isn’t it?) and Mer almost died, they ended the episode with their family gathered around, smiling as they took turns holding newborn son, Bailey. Our hearts swelled, we may have cried a little, and then we braced ourselves for things to be less blissful next season.

It’s not that we’re cynics here — we just know that creator Shonda Rhimes doesn’t let anyone stay happy for too long. We understand; things wouldn’t be as exciting and dramatic if people were happy all the time, but we sincerely hope MerDer doesn’t go through any big problems in Season 10. Thankfully, our minds can be slightly at ease after looking through the spoilers surrounding the OG couple. Read on to see what’s happening for Meredith and Derek in Season 10, then hit the comments with what you want to see for them. (We’ve already done that if you want to take a gander, too.)

Surprise, surprise — MerDer has dramatic premiere problems. In the two-hour premiere (which picks up right where the Season 9 finale left off), Meredith and Derek are dealing with the “aftermath” of her traumatic labor. Things are apparently “dramatic, emotional, and exciting.”

Both doctors juggle their new roles... and leave the hospital?! With a new baby in the mix, they have to learn how to deal with a newborn, and sacrifices have to be made. “We’re going to see them in the hospital together and juggling their roles in a major way,” consulting producer Dan Bucatinsky recently revealed, and Patrick Dempsey added that Derek will be “spending more time with the children than his career.” And by that, he apparently meant that the new parents are going to take a leave of absence from the OR.

Tension and unhappiness ahead. First off, why? We just want MerDer to be happy. However, Patrick notes that “they can’t just be happy” and there will be some tension due to family vs. career ahead. That said, Shonda has admitted she'd "have to go into hiding" if she broke MerDer up, so we have a feeling the relationship is safe.

Someone’s fate is sealed. Though this is more speculation, the Season 10 premiere is titled “Seal Our Fate,” and we have a feeling that could be about them. Whether that fate is positive or negative remains to be seen.

Derek could depart after Season 10. This one is a long shot, but Patrick recently dissed Grey’s and hinted that he could leave after Season 10. His contract (along with Ellen’s) expires at the end of the season, so it’s possible, though he did talk about loving the show, too. Fingers crossed he stays ‘til the end!
