We know that Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes puts a lot of thought into her shows and the characters that populate her fast-talking, high-drama worlds, but we had no idea she was this detailed.

Recently, a fan pointed out to Shonda that Callie's full name, Calliope, means beautiful voice. Given that Sara Ramirez is a Tony award winning singer who brought her ethereal voice to Grey's during the musical episode, this seems very appropriate. But was it intentional?

Shonda has the answer:

There you have it, Shonda purposefully named Callie to reflect Sara's stunning voice. Of course, this makes sense: Sara landed the role in the first place because ABC bigwigs were so impressed with her performance in Spamalot, the Broadway show that won her the Tony.
