Grey’s Anatomy has never been the most happy-go-lucky of shows. Lives are put on the line every day, and not all stories have a happy ending. But if this past season left you with a bit more depression than you’d like to handle — cheer up. Show creator Shonda Rhimes promises that this are definitely looking up when Grey’s returns for Season 10 this fall.

Shonda tells TV Line that fans can expect a “lighter, funnier” season, particularly when it comes to MerDer. Yes, things will be looking up for Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey). She says that, of all the show’s characters, the new parents “probably” have the most happiness in store for them, but adds that with post-surgery stress and a bit of post-baby sleep deprivation, the couple’s life still won’t be perfectly flawless all the time.

Happiest of all, though, will be Alex (Justin Chambers) and Jo (Camilla Luddington). “I want us to have fun with them,” Shonda says.  “Because they’re one of our happiest couples, Jo and Alex are playing our humor a lot, which is nice.”

But even with all the joy and positivity, not every couple will have it easy. We did not leave Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) in a good place, and Shonda says that the couple’s broken relationship isn’t going to just fix itself overnight.

Between Arizona’s cheating and all her amputation issues, Calzona has a “definitely large amount” of work ahead of them before they can get back to normal. Shonda wouldn’t confirm for sure Calzona is done for good, but she didn’t exactly make us feel all that confident about their chances of getting back together, either.

“For them, there’s a lot going on. There’s no, ‘In this episode, they’re going to get back together,’” she says. Even through all the struggle, fans can expect a few lighter moments.

“I want this season to feel lighter and funnier for everybody, and even in Callie’s pain, it’s very funny,” Rhimes promises. “Its painful in a funny way as opposed to just dragging us down in misery.”

Hear that guys? Smile. Take a deep breath. Everything is going to work out okay.
