The news just broke that Grey's Anatomy original Sandra Oh (Cristina Yang) will be departing the show after Season 10, and we are devastated. Seriously. We're still processing our feelings, but we know they aren't positive.
We're happy that Sandra has made this decision early, and we're sure Shonda Rhimes and co. will give Cristina the send off she deserves, but we already know we're going to miss her for too many reasons to count. Still, we're going to give it a shot.
Here are the top five reasons we're going to miss Cristina, and Sandra Oh's performance, after she leaves the show.
Meredith and Cristina's friendship. Forgot romances — Cristina and Meredith's friendship has been one of the most important elements of the show since the beginning. Sure, they've had their ups and downs, but in the end they always come back to each other. It's sadly rare that this kind of nuanced, heartfelt portrayal of female friendship is given so much importance on TV, and it's hard to imagine one without the other.
Owen and Cristina. Yes, Owen and Cristina's relationship seems pretty doomed, anyway, but it's been fascinating to watch the disintegration of their marriage, and we were looking forward to seeing them navigate a friendship/colleagueship going forward. Well, at least we get a season of it. That's something...
Her snark. What will we do without Cristina's one-liners? No, seriously — what are we going to do? While "comedy" isn't the first thing that jumps to mind when we think "Sandra Oh," she's actually a gifted comedic actress who can often inject some needed humor into otherwise deadly serious moments.
Those big dramatic moments. Sandra Oh is one of the most gifted actresses in a talented cast. Remember that time Burke left Cristina right before their wedding? Or her devastating speech about her trauma in the woods after the crash? Or how about that entire abortion/cheating/divorce arc with Owen? Sandra commits to any and everything Shonda throws at her. We hate the idea of this show without her.
She knows who she is. Cristina is just an amazing character: Talented, ambitious, sure of herself, and determined to do whatever it takes to get what she wants out of life. We love watching her, and it will be very hard to say goodbye.
