From the sound of it, that emergency C-section and ensuing splenectomy Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) endured at the end of Grey’s Anatomy Season 9 is just the start of her challenges as an attending and mother of two.

"Meredith is juggling a lot," creator Shonda Rhimes tells TV Guide. "She's trying to be a good mom, wife, and friend; and this is the year of her attending career in which she should really be trying to make her mark. To me, this is Meredith's lean-in season. She's going to discover whether or not she's interested in being that person who puts her career first."

Shonda is referring to the zeitgeisty book Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead — written by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg's book — which examines what impairs and what empowers women to reach their full professional potential.

We're not sure Meredith will ever prioritize her career over her kids, since she resented her own mom, Ellis Grey, for doing just that. But she's not one to give up her surgical ambitions either, so we expect to see quite the balancing act once Season 10 resumes on September 26.
