Though Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey aren't taking the Sandra Oh route and leaving Grey’s Anatomy — not yet, anyway — Season 10 will see Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd leaving Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
So, why would two of the Pacific Northwest's hottest doctors (in more ways that one) abandon their ever-rising medical careers? The reasons are twofold… and pint-sized: Zola and Bailey.
TV Guide reports that Mer and Der take a OR moratorium in the upcoming season to better take care of their kids, particularly newborn Bailey. But the parental leave doesn't suit them well, Patrick tells the site.
"They're struggling a bit because they want to get back in the ER," he says. "They're just losing their minds and they want to have something else to do. They get stuck just doing dishes and diapers."
We wouldn't be surprised if Meredith gained new appreciation for Cristina's no-children mindset. You certainly don't see Yang needing to strip off her surgical scrubs to change a diaper!
Idle hands may be the devil's playthings, but idle surgically-inclined hands are just hell for the Grey's power couple.
How long do you think they'll be able to keep a scalpel out of their hands? Five episodes? Three? One? Make your wager below, and catch the Grey’s Anatomy Season 10 premiere on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
